As part of NCIA’s ongoing engagement with key actors supporting cassava industrialisation, the team recently visited a GIZ/Clayuca-supported cassava chipping facility operated with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).
The visit brought together the NCIA team represented by Morenikeji Akinseye Project Lead at BCG, and Titilola Fagbemi Investment Analyst at LBS, alongside Dr Emmanuel Okogbenin, Director of Programme Development and Commercialisation at AATF; Joseph Alloh Country Manager at AgriDrive; Samuel Ogunleye, and Kenneth Obichukwu. The visit aimed to deepen the team’s understanding of AATF’s processing model, observe the Clayuca chipping technology in operation, and explore the potential application of the technology to cassava chipping opportunities.
The Clayuca system is a fully automated line that takes cassava tubers through peeling, chipping, and drying with minimal manual intervention. Beyond manually loading tubers into the machine and spreading chips on the dryer, the machine runs through to packaged output on its own. The team observed this as one of the most efficient, quality-controlled approaches feasible for cassava chipping at this scale.
The facility also runs a zero-waste model, producing High Quality Cassava Flour (HQCF) alongside High Quality Cassava Peel (HQCP), which is sold as animal feed. Proximity to suppliers including a farm being established by AgriDrive also makes feedstock logistics seamless. This contributes to AATF’s broader model, which supports both farmers and downstream processors.
NCIA continues to engage with stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, and advance the development of a sustainable and commercially viable cassava processing ecosystem.
